India - Location and Size


India is one of the ancient civilisations in the world. India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan are the four countries together called Indian Sub-continent. Among the four countries, India is the largest. The name INDIA is derived from the River Indus.


India - Location

    • The location of India is entirely in the Northern Hemisphere.
    • India lies between latitudes 8° 4' North and 37° 6' North.
    • Longitudes 68° 7' East and 97° 25' East
    • The Latitude, Tropic of Cancer 23° 30' N divides India into two halves.
    • To the southeast of India are Andaman and Nicbar Islands in the Bay of Bengal.
    • To the southwest of India are the Lakshadweep islands in the Arabian sea.

      India - Size

        • The area of India is 3.28 million sq. km.
        • India occupies 2.4% of the total geographical area of the world.
        • India is the seventh largest country in the world.
        • India has a land boundary of 15,000 km.
        • Coastal line of 7,516.6 km including Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands.
        • To the north the mountains surrounding India are Young fold mountains.
        • To the south India divides the Indian ocean into two seas Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
        • Time lag from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh is 2 hrs. So, we consider the Standard meridian of India 82 30' E longitude, which passes through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.
        • The latitudinal extent influences the duration of day and night as one moves from south to north.
